Portico Welcomes 1,000th Library Supporting Digital Preservation

Portico is pleased to announce the University Library of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, as its 1,000th participating library. Since its inception in 2006, libraries have relied on Portico to preserve academic e-journals, e-books, and other digital scholarship, and ensure that it remains available for future generations. The University Library of Erlangen-Nuremberg joined alongside 53 other German institutions following an exhaustive evaluation funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation), which recommended participation in Portico as part of their national strategy for digital preservation of licensed content. Portico Archive Hits Terabyte Milestone

Earlier this year, Portico hit a big milestone: we now preserve 400 Terabytes (TB) of data. For some (say NASA) this number may not sound that big, but consider what it represents: 68 million articles, 794 million images, 3.7 million digitized historical collection items, 679,000 e-books, and much more. Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries Joins Portico

Portico and the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries (CSAL) today announced a historic 10-year consortium-wide agreement that brings all CSAL primary member libraries in as Portico participants. By joining Portico, Swiss libraries and the communities they serve can be assured of enduring access to the academic e-journals and e-books they have invested in. The agreement covers the state universities in Switzerland, the Federal Institutes of Technology Domain, as well as the Universities of Applied Sciences and the Swiss National Library. Read more

ITHAKA Founder and Trustee William G. Bowen Dies at 83

The world has lost a uniquely gifted leader and friend. Bill Bowen passed away peacefully on October 20, 2016. He dedicated his entire professional life to the world of education, and was founding chairman of JSTOR and ITHAKA and founding trustee of Artstor. Global Preservation Effort Portico Tops One Billion Files

Libraries around the world are moving rapidly to holding digital collections, but will all those bits and bytes be here in the future? ITHAKA, a not-for-profit leader in developing new solutions to advance and preserve knowledge, is making sure the answer to that question is yes. Today the organization announced that its large-scale digital preservation service Portico now preserves one billion files or, in practical terms, more than 20,000 e-journals, 400,000 e-books, and 600 million images that include vast collections of historical newspapers. Portico has nearly doubled the amount of content it preserves in the past year, representing the ingestion of more than 24 million files per month into the archive, and pushing it over the one billion mark. Artstor-ITHAKA Community Letter

To our creators, partners, and users: We are writing to you as a valued member of our community to share the good news that Artstor, the nonprofit provider of the Artstor Digital Library of images and the Shared Shelf platform for cataloguing and digital asset management, will now operate under the umbrella of its fellow nonprofit ITHAKA, the organization that currently operates three other services: JSTOR, Portico and Ithaka S+R. As you may know, Artstor, ITHAKA and JSTOR were all created as mission-driven nonprofit organizations with the initial support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and with similar aims.
